ACLU to Release Report on Reporters’ Shield
Washington – As part of Sunshine Week 2007, the Free Expression Network (FEN), an alliance of organizations dedicated to preserving the right to free expression, will host a Capitol Hill briefing on the state of the First Amendment.
What: Sunshine Week First Amendment Briefing
Who: Greg Proops, comedian
Ronald Collins, First Amendment Center
James Tucker, ACLU Washington Legislative Office
Christopher Pifer, American Friends Service Committee
Jay Dyckman, National Coalition Against Censorship
Julie Sternberg, ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project
When: 2:00pm Tuesday, March 13, 2007
WHERE: Rm. 2226, Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC
Topics to be covered include:
· Reporters’ shield laws and their importance to a free press
· Abstinence-only programs and the censorship of medically accurate information
· Scientific censorship and its harm to scientific progress and impartial research
· FBI and DoD domestic spying and its chilling effect on the marketplace of ideas
In addition, the American Civil Liberties Union will release its new report, “Publish and Perish: The Need for a Federal Reporters’ Shield Law.” The report reveals that journalists in America are at greater risk of imprisonment for protecting their sources than at any time in history, and details ways freedom of the press can be balanced with the need to protect our collective security.
The National Coalition Against Censorship will also release "Political Science: A report on censorship of science from The Knowledge Project of the National Coalition Against Censorship." This report details the First Amendment implications of politically motivated suppression and censorship of scientific research.
